Queries after Cancellation of CBSE Boards
The recent cancellation of the class 12th examinations by the Central Board of Secondary Education has affected a lot of students (CBSE). I was suddenly inundated with calls from students and parents as a career counsellor. They are all in a state of frenzy, unsure of how to proceed. The most frequently asked questions were, "How will the board evaluate now?" and "What will be included on the 12th board mark sheet?" Alternatively, "How will this affect my chances of appearing in future competitive examinations!"
Students enter the undergraduate levels of university education during the 12th grade. Their primary concern is admissions, particularly with those institutions or universities that have historically admitted students based on their performance on the class 12th board examination. A few students travel outside of India, and they have their own set of concerns and questions about international admissions.
Indeed, it was a significant choice. It's even more so because these board examinations are prepared for not just the student, but the entire family. I understand that the majority of educators are relieved by the decision, albeit with a heavy heart. As they say, difficult times necessitate more difficult decisions. And it occurred.
Although nothing can be predicted at the moment, one thing is certain: CBSE will undoubtedly devise a solution that addresses the majority of the above-mentioned concerns. It is not just about school boards of education. I'm sure that numerous universities throughout the world will also become more adaptable and find ways to accommodate these changes.
I'm distressed to learn that some families are still debating the decision to cancel the examination. Life is more important than these exams, my friends. I strongly advise society to put an end to debates over the decision and accept it. It is time to begin planning ahead. Allow me to state a fact. Numerous students who have previously performed at the bottom of the marks pyramid are overjoyed with this decision. They recognise their own value in light of the current circumstances. That is how life is. Not everything manifests exactly as we hope and desire. At times, one must come to terms with completely unexpected circumstances.
Certainties include the following: "Students from this year's COVID promotion batch are truly blessed." The reason for this is that they have received an early lesson in insecurity, non-conformity, and unanticipated life challenges! Indeed, the marks earned in the class 12th board exam assist students in navigating their way into institutions of higher education. Believe me, dear students, no one will ever ask you to prove your worth based on your class 12th certificate throughout your career! That is true.
At this point, the role of schools and career counsellors is even more critical. Today, more than ever, students require counselling and proper guidance.
So what happens next?
My advice is to increase your patience a little bit. Maintain your composure and optimism. Put an end to your anxieties.
Do not discard your notes, copies, or other memorabilia. Keep it secure for at least another few months. Maintain consistent practise and a firm grasp on academic concepts.
Prepare for the competitive examination by starting now. Be prepared for much more rigorous screening at the entrance test level this year. Practise appearing for online proctored tests.
Make the most of this time by carefully planning your career. Consume quality literature and educate yourself about possible future careers. Consider your inner strengths, abilities, and personality characteristics. Match your abilities to future career opportunities.
Another important lesson to learn, particularly for this Z generation, is to break the habit of last-minute preparations. As we have all seen recently, the situation can change at any time! Today's vulnerable students are those who ignored regular schooling, class tests, and model tests. They considered making it up during the final two months prior to the board examinations. These students have almost nothing to offer schools in terms of assisting them in conducting a meaningful and justified alternate evaluation!
Bitter truth of our society
Although a student earned an A+ on the 'Swimming Examination,' he drowned when he was thrown into the water!
